BUSINESS IMPACT OF WORKING CAREGIVERS FOCUS OF KEYNOTE ADDRESS AT OHIO GOVERNOR'S CONFERENCE ON AGING
(Richmond, Virginia) Ron Moore, president of Fidia Corporation, founder of FamilyCare America and creator of the national initiative, American Business Cares, provided the keynote address at the recent Ohio Governor's Conference On Aging in Columbus, Ohio.
Moore presented a business case for why employers must seek solutions to the challenges and costs of an aging population and a workforce encountering growing family caregiving responsibilities. Moore provided insight into why more has not been done already and what can be done about it. He spotlighted low-costs ways companies can begin to address these issues and how such efforts pay off for the employee and the employer.
Moore, an expert in opportunity identification, is credited with discerning the business opportunity that became CarMax (NYSE: KMX), the first used car superstore, growing to over $1 billion in annual sales in less than five years. "Moore's unique business perspective adds a much needed voice, one that commands attention from C-level and HR managers in organizations of all sizes," reflects Rose Walker-Smith, former corporate director of business development for ComfortKeepers, one of the country's fastest growing franchises in the home health care industry.
Moore has become a well-respected thought leader on identifying ways that the age wave and the caregiving phenomenon will create both opportunities and threats for companies in virtually every industry. According to Moore, companies are recognizing that the number of employees with family caregiving responsibilities is increasing, and that it is impacting their organizations in significant ways.
"Clearly, the caregiving phenomenon is an employer problem - not just an employee problem," says Moore. "Companies that approach it as such stand to gain significantly in terms of retention and recruiting advantages, health care cost containment, and improved operating efficiencies by meeting the needs of caregiving employees."
During the Governor's conference, Moore cited the American Business Cares initiative as an example of the kind of effort required to bring attention and focus to the issues and costs of caregivers in the workplace and to identify and provide solutions to reduce the financial and social costs to employers and employees. Moore stated, "Clearly, in terms of productivity and the bottom-line, businesses are seeing that there's a legitimate financial advantage to be gained by proactively attending to the needs of working caregivers."
